probably due to being a nurse, like the other one who's died as well today who was about the same age

There's the tin foil hat part of me that suspects that while the 5G roll out hasn't caused this, it could well have helped increased its spread by further fucking with people's immune responses.

I'm going to play the cOnTrArIaN, the virus is nasty but it's nowhere near the Spanish flu. It's only now in 'week 12' after the first case that the death toll is above the 5 year average, though who knows maybe the 'lockdown' has slowed its spread?

It's clearly pretty deadly for those with compromised immune systems but then again so is normal flu. Theory is the virus came out of a Chinese lab, wouldn't surprise me.

In conclusion there's always the temptation to play the simple game of saying the UK's response has been wrong, countries like Taiwan have used masks and quarantined people with temperatures while life pretty much goes on as normal. Banning large gatherings makes sense, not sure I agree with the shutting down of public spaces though. Who knows where these extra powers and loss of liberties could lead us.

Sweden still hasn't done anything in response and are following the 'herd immunity' strategy the UK Government first entertained and was lambasted for. Who knows where all this is heading, if it really is as bad as all that we've got people talking about everything not returning to normal for months or even years. In which case if the power of the virus is overblown, will our extreme measures be worth fucking the economy over? Suicides went up a third after 2008, so in the end maybe we'll save some pensioners and create misery for everyone else.

Yeah 80 year olds die of flu all the time but fit and healthy 30 year olds don't. While the majority recover, like flu, it's clear it's far deadlier. I think it's right to say if we took no interventions and let it run through the population unchecked, there'd be a lot of death. Nobody is even remotely vaccinated to it. Herd immunity is too much of a gamble, not when the virus is this dangerous and it almost feels like a lottery on if you would die. Plus with so many getting ill in a short period of time hospitals would be overwhelmed and even mild medical intervention wouldn't be possible, compounding the death toll even more as preventable deaths stack up on top of the unpreventable ones. Unrelated deaths too for people needing urgent care they can't get due to coronavirus demand, heart attacks, injuries etc. This is what promoted the governmental u-turn, yes we'd probably have "an immune population" at the end of it, but what would 'it' look like? Deaths knocking on the door of a million, in the space of several months, mass hysteria from people, mass civil unrest from people refusing to go to work because their fit and healthy co-worker died of it a few days ago etc. It would have been mental, no surprises Cummings was the brainchild and has, quite literally, legged it once it got a little too close for comfort.

We're doing the right thing IMO, stifling the spread and letting it drip into the NHS, buying us time to gain immunity steadily through as many recovered patients as possible and allow time for a vaccine. A lot of this isn't really the government's thinking, unlike Brexit which was a political and ideological project and experts weren't really welcome, this is a proper world event, suddenly they knew they had to call in the experts on this one and take their lead.

Sweden are doing social distancing etc btw, they simply asked their population to do it rather than make it law. they told them they're all adults and know the responsibility they have in not spreading it. It seems less stringent but they are behind us on the curve though, same way we were behind Italy 2-3 weeks ago. No country should be kicking its feet back and thinking it's cracked this until much later down the line, only when the dust has truly settled we'll know which countries over-reacted and under-reacted. So far though South Korea appear to have done the best.
