Default Cuts to disability benefits press ahead

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/poli...-benefits.html

Quote:
A group of rebel Tory MPs are preparing to challenge their own Government's plans to axe disability benefits in a vote in the House of Commons today.

The Bill proposes to reduce the amount of support new claimants receive from 102.15 a week to 73.10, from April 2017 – a cut of 29.05 per week or nearly 1,500 a year.

Ministers have said that the cut is in order to "remove the financial incentives that could otherwise discourage claimants from taking steps back to work."

Yeah, that sweet sweet 400 a month gravy train.

These are people they admit are not fit for work, but then shrink their funds because they think being given too much money will stop them seeking work. That doesn't even fit in with the usual bullshit about perfectly healthy jobseekers living off dole, never mind people in electric wheelchairs.

The Nasty Party really is in full swing, even moderate Tory MPs fought this one.

The motion passed last night though. One for the Lords to, hopefully again, prevent.

This one will directly affect you Enoch, 30% drop in your income.

It wouldn't affect Enoch as he's not a new claimant and isn't in WRAG, but it's bullshit all the same.

The whole point of WRAG is to help people who have a capability of going back to work in future, but cutting their allowance isn't the right way to go about it.

Once it is passes the protection for existing claimants will not last long It's the easiest way to get there, implement it and then ratchet it up with amendments, rather than getting the full fat end-product to be passed initially. They'll soon phase it in for more ESA claimants, especially when this "saving" returns as minimal, they'll dig deeper into the welfare budget. They're obsessed with it.

This is against their manifesto pledge and statements on disability benefits, they said they wouldn't cut them.

I suppose it won't matter to most of their voters, after all, they're paying less tax now.

I think I've said before that the current system is a contradiction and anomalous.

What I mean is, the government says a certain amount is 'enough to live off'. This is what, for example, people on Jobseekers allowance get. So, if it's enough for them to live off, then it must follow that it's also enough for someone 'sick' to live off - unless that person has particular needs which have higher costs (this wouldn't include prescriptions because they are 'free' anyway) in which case they'd be on the higher tier of benefits anyway, and/or not in the 'WRAG'.

So, to me and correct me if my logic is faulty, it seems to follow that either WRAG ESA should be reduced to be the same level as JSA, or JSA should be raised to same level as WRAG ESA. The current system is a contradiction.

It seems pretty self evident that if someone is comfortable on benefits then there is less of an imperative to get off them. And it is equally unsurprising that many of the people benefiting from this system will say, when asked, that they want it to continue and that it would be wrong to change it.

How can someone be comfortable living on 100 a week, you may ask? Well, they aren't living on 100 a week, is the answer. They are probably living on the equivalent of 300, 400, 500 a week, whatever the prevailing rate of local housing allowance deems their rent can be, and so on. But those aren't great wages, you may say. No, they aren't. But they may be equal to or greater than what the person on benefits would get in work, so their imperative to get a job and work their ass off to get what they currently receive for doing nothing, is pretty obviously not going to be terribly high. So on the face of it, the government's claims stand up to scrutiny.

It still comes back to the far wider issue of things like a citizen's income and whether in a highly advanced society like ours, people SHOULD be compelled to 'work' and ought not to have the option of a basic income sufficient to sustain people at a minimum level, and to allow them to work if they want to achieve a lifestyle above mere subsistence. A question which is not asked by most politicians who hold to the 'all must work, except those who were born into privilege' status quo.

The trouble with that is that when people aren't working there is more time to ask what the fuck the government are doing...

I think that these cuts just fit into the 'things are tough' narrative that the Tories rely on for votes. Most working class people have a poor grip on economics so won't quite understand why they're being squeezed but will understand that they are being squeezed. When it's time to vote they'll stick with stability, the incumbents because things are tough and they don't want them to get worse...
