Default Opportunities for autistic adults

Spotted this news story a few times over the last few weeks:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/artista-...s-with-autism/

There have been a few similar stories over the last year but mostly from the States. I think that the lack of social support, and nationalised (mental) health care in the US means that such schemes are much more vital than they are here in helping those afflicted with moderate to severe autism and other conditions find their place in society, and to help them feel as normalised as possible.

In the UK, our care for such people is often limited to welfare support and social care. With work, I have regular weekly sessions with two different people who have different levels of inclusion in the community. One of them has recently started working at a nursery for three days each week which not only gives him spending money for the pub, it also gives his week structure and has helped temper his anger issues.

Do you know of any similar schemes near you? Should they be private enterprises or government-funded?
