Default Self-service checkouts in supermarkets

The march of the self service checkouts continues Not content with adding more and more to the end of the store (nearest the exit) they have now ripped up several of the manned tills right in the middle as well.

In a few years it has gone from a handful of self service tills at the very end, to maybe 1/4 of them being self serve, to now it must be getting on for half

What is the opinion of people here about them?

Clearly the supermarkets want to move from people using them for the odd few items in a basket, to almost, if not everyone using them even if they have a large trolley full of shopping.

I dislike them immensely. They are putting people out of work who would otherwise man the tills. They are impersonal compared to having a real person serving you. And finally, to the idea that they represent progress because it is labour saving technology? No, it isn't labour saving. It saves the supermarket the cost of labour for an employee to man the checkout, but a person still has to manually scan everything through. That person is you: you become de facto an unpaid employee of the supermarket and have to serve yourself.

I think they're fine for those who just need to buy a few items and know what they're doing. They'll never replace the full tills.

I don't think resorting to makework is a very good idea.

Plus for every job lost scanning items, a job opens up for someone coding/installing/maintaining the till.

For servicing the lunch crowd then they are fine but the full time shop? The new ones in Asda are designed for the full shop as they are full size with no person. Think the idea will be to replace the checkout staff eventually.

Plus don't people buy online more these days.

I prefer them. They're usually quicker as a lot of people are scared of them, and there's also the bonus of not having to talk to someone.

The small hand basket self service checkouts are quick and convenient as there is less queuing and so the supermarket is providing a better service. Great idea for when you want to rush in and buy a few things without a long wait.

The full sized self trolley checkout ones are slow and offer a poorer service than a normal manned checkout. I have to use them when I go to ASDA early for a big shop and no checkout staff are on the tills, I find the experience frustrating and annoying. They don't register your bags without an assistant verifying them. They don't give you enough time to bag the items before annoyingly insisting you do. You are essentially working for the supermarket for free.

I find them to be okay. The M&S ones seem to work better than the Tesco ones, though. And most of the people who use them FUCK ME OFF - a ridiculously high proportion of them scan their stuff and just pile it on the bag section, then afterwards pack their stuff... it's far quicker to shove stuff in bags as you go along.
