Except that your example *is* covered by economics when you consider purchasing power - if the rate at which your purchasing power is decreasing is less than the rate at which what you get for a given amount is increasing, then the deferred purchase argument clearly doesnt add up.

My laptop is occasionally freezing and requiring a hard reset, I'm going to assume this is a hardware fault as Windows for all its flaws doesn't do this post the 9x era. It isn't overheating.

I'm wondering if it could be my hard drive (SSD) on the way out, which would actually be better than it being the laptop itself as it would be a lot easier to replace. There's no indication of any problem with the SSD in its health stats though.

How good are HP laptops in this price range, quality wise. (The specs are fine. I want the lower res screen as it's easier to read etc.)

Dunno about the laptop but have windows still not sorted out scaling properly yet? On a Mac, it's easier to read the higher the resolution regardless because you just get smoother fonts and graphics, rather than a change in size of anything.

That's right, they still haven't unfortunately. If I was getting a Mac I know it wouldn't be an issue.
