Basically we need skills to pay the bills or we become a cog in someone else's grasp for freedom.

This is how I see most "work", sure it is possible for a few to escape the duality but only through acquiring skill. Otherwise...

In its present form capitalism will always create "victims" out of the system's insistence and dependence on subjugation of the lower levels. This also makes me think the "living wage" is a fallacy because those at the bottom of the hierarchy will almost always be "victims".

That said...

If all our happiness is bound up entirely in our personal circumstances it is difficult not to demand of life more than it has to give.

We have to find happiness outside of the way our materialist society dictates, being around nature being one of the best. /hippy

Can we create a capitalism that allows genuine chance of reward for the hardworking at the bottom or will it always be a case of carrots on sticks and a game of musical chairs?

We all want progress. But progress means getting nearer to the place where you want to be. And if you have taken a wrong turning, then to go forward does not get you any nearer. If you are on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man.
